Product Description

The BMW VANOS system is integral to the performance of your engine. VAN0S is a variable camshaft timing system that uses oil pressure to move the camshaft position depending on engine load and demands. VAN0S is always functioning - retarding or advancing the intake cam as needed. So when it's not functioning you really feel the difference. The car will be down on power and torque, especially in the mid-range, and your fuel economy will decrease. There may be other telltale signs - camshaft or VAN0S fault codes, misfires and fault codes, and the dreaded "vanos rattle" that signs like marbles in a coffee can but is actually the bearings allowing too much play in the VANOS piston shaft. A new VAN0S unit will do wonders for your car's performance!

Diagnosis and repair depends on what symptoms you have. Trouble codes and faults can usually be traced to a camshaft position sensor or the solenoid not allowing the VANOS to move. But the rattle is a sure sign that the VAN0S is in need of a rebuild or replacement. But be aware that S54 engine rattle can mean many different things, including bad valve adjustment, timing chain tensioner, and the chain rails. The typical lifespan of the Original BMW VAN0S unit is 100,000 miles.

Our rebuilt VANOS units are a complete overhaul and reverse engineering of the S54 unit. There are a number of shortcomings in the design of the VAN0S that have been addressed in our rebuilds. The entire unit is disassembled, cleaned ultrasonically, and rebuilt with higher quality seals. The oil pump is also rebuilt with some proprietary improvements. A new solenoid pack and oil pressure valve are also installated with a new seal plate. A new VANOS cover gasket is also included for a hassle-free install. All of this will ensure a thorough and fresh VAN0S overhaul.

In addition to the VANOS, there are a few other problem areas with the S54 that should be addressed along with the VANOS. The cam sprocket hold down bolts are well known for failing (actually shearing off). BMW may have recognized the issue and replaced the hex bolts with a hardened Torx bolt. If this replacement isn't documented on your car then you should definiately have a new set on hand during the VANOS replacement. Also, the hub of the crankshaft sprocket has a defect that can cause the tabs on the sprocket to break off. We offer a cryogenically treated sprocket that lasts longer than a stock replacement. There is a bolt on the side of the cylinder head that holds the left side timing chain rail in place. This bolt can back out and leave the rail flopping around inside the timing cover (this is also the cause for mis-diagnosed VAN0S rattles). Check the bolt and make sure it's tight. For any sudden engine rattles and odd noises we strongly advise stopping the engine and seeking a professional analysis of the noise.

To prevent VANOS-related issues in the future and prolong the life of its internal components, stay on top of your maintenance , clean the filter on the oil pressure valve, and have regular oil changes with the BMW 10-60 oil.
